Transfering Digital HD tapes at VSI HD in Southington

Today May 28th 2008, I traveled to Southington Connecticut to transfer DVC Pro HD tapes to Hard Drive. These are the tapes that captured part of the documentary film on Croatian Radio Club of New York and Vinko Kužina as one of the founders of the radio program that will celebrate 40 years of existence next year. This is the Voice of Free Croatia. That is how they start each broadcast.

For me it is 200 + miles drive to Southington and back, and after the second trip this month, I can tell you it is worth it. The staff is pleasant, confident and competent. I highly recommend their services. Their website is

Here are few photos. Unfortunately we do not have one with Layne Rodney, a man who coordinated all of this and Bruce Nicki.

Patrick, Rich and Nenad

Patrick Dell was very knowledgeable about Croatia to the finest details, which impressed me immensely, especially because of the current issues (picked up all of this from his last trip to Croatia in 2007) . Rich Creaturo was very comforting in providing service of transfer to DVD and DVC pro SD last time, from DVC Pro HD tapes. There is a difference in service when people are willing to do what is needed and do it with a style. They create the atmosphere of trust in the field that not too many people know about. We are talking about High Definition in video and a simple human touch.

Eric Levesque, Adam Simon and Nenad Bach

Great energy and competent people. Adam is originally from South Africa. Whenever I had a question, he knew the answer.

Greg Simone in his HD Video Laboratory

Next door man Greg, who took the photo above this one and kindly offered upon Eric's request to show me the real deal High Definition, from the material that I just transfered to Hard Disc. The quality of the material was just astounding. I have never seen anything like this before. Zvonko Vidusin, cinematographer - GREAT JOB. Greg sounded like a southern gentlemen and behaved like one as well.

I am looking forward to working with these guys in the future and I highly recommend their services. It's worth the trip, and yes, there is a free and available parking, not that I expected anything else, but living in New York, these things become important.

Also this is the second time I tasted

Recorded piano for "Fly Away Like a Swan" and "Have a Reason, Have a Faith"

Today May 27th 2008 I recorded acoustic piano for two songs "Fly Away Like a Swan" and "Have a Reason, Have a Faith". These are the two last songs in a batch that I started to record year ago, with Gary Burke on drums. Few more songs will be recorded for the film that we'll put together based on music and we will record this together with the whole band.

Session with John Holbrook, as always goes smooth. This photo is done from my hand as most of them are, in the kitchen this time. Also I started to learn Pro-Tools program, after so many years of procrastination. So far I was using Logic Audio and RADAR, plus 2 inch analog tape with 16 tracks this time to record drums.

So far so good. And yes, John has a new haircut.

Nenad Bach and Jamie Cohen live via webcast New York, USA - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Nov 2006

In 2006, I worked for a semester as a guest lecturer at Taylor's University College in Malaysia. My students recorded original human rights songs and performed them live for Nenad Bach, at his recording studio in Croton on Hudson, New York. Nenad then played the students a song from his new CD "Everything is Forever" and talked with the students about his experiences in creating music that raises awareness for humanitarian causes. Professor Darko Žubrinić, based at the University of Zagreb, Croatia stayed up all night to match timezones in order to speak with the students about modern Croatian history.

ASCAP 9th Annual Concert Music Awards on May 22, 2008

Nenad N. Bach and Peter Schickele P.D.Q. Bach MC of the event.

Paul Moravec, Cia Toscanini and Nenad Bach

Paul Moravec won 2004 Pulitzer Prize for music. And yes he is of Croatian descent. Cia Toscanini is ASCAP's assistant Vice President of Concert Music. Soon an article will be posted on CROWN about Paul Moravec. The whole group of composers and people who help them achieve what they so strongly desire is vigorous and cheerful.

The youngest recipient of the composers awards. Six years old Emily Bear with her 100 year old grandfather Judge Max Reicher, who is still working as a judge. A beautiful and insightful conversation with both of them. These smiles speak volume.

John Corigliano receives Aaron Copland Award

In celebration of his 70th year, ASCAP presents the Aaron Copland Award to distinguished member, John Corigliano, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the Grawemeyer Award, the Academy Award for best film Score, a member of the American Academy of Arts & Letters, mentor, teacher, friend and exemplary musical citizen.

Nenad Bach, John Corigliano and Fran Richard

John Corigliano is a Grammy and Oscar winner, a famous composer, worth your attention if you are not familiar with his work. I was amazed by his talent 15 years ago. He just celebrated his 70th birthday and looks like 50. Fran Richard, vice president and director of concert music for the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Woman that is admired by all composers. And we are not easy people to deal with. Heart of Gold.

Michael Spudic, Pauline Stack and Nenad Bach

Michael is Concert Music Administrator for ASCAP. A long time friend and a Croatian Irish American with a vast knowledge of history and human behavior.

Andrea and Emily Bear, grandfather Max Reicher and Nenad

Lovely moment in time. Emily is 6, Max is 100. The rest of us in between.

Triumph of The Swell Season at Radio City Music Hall -May 19th 2008

Sold out Radio City Music Hall. May 19, 2008.

Glen Hansard and Nenad Bach

One of the best concert that I have seen in my life. And I have seen Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Police, King Krimson, The Band, U2, Pavarotti etc... Insightful, bold, unpredictable, music fabric for musicians as well as fans. Van Morrison. Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova, Colm, Cheri, Dino...night to remember.

Radio City Music Hall - sold out. 6000 people. First song, Glen comes out and sings without microphone and acoustic guitar.

Last song Van Morrison's Into the Mystic.

Long conversation after the show. Peak into the essence of a brilliant artist. Friendliness, joy, higher intelligence and higher consciousness.

Nenad and Colm (violin player)

Great conversation on many subjects. From war in Croatia to Trogir and Zoran Orlić. Irish soul so close to me. No need for translation of any kind. All understood.

Dino Rulli and Nenad Bach at La Famiglia 12:30 AM, Broadway and 49th in Manhattan, New York. We drank Snaple. Mine cap said: "At birth a Dalmatian is always pure white". Since I am a Dalmatian by my mother (Dalmatia is a geographic term). It is a southern Croatia and the Dogs,... yes the dogs came from there. Although pure white at birth, I admit. I have a few spots but not sharing the information publicly, where they are. No man have seen it.

We started a documentary film on "Voice of free Croatia" in New York

In action: Vinko Kužina, Nenad Bach and Zvonko Vidušin

On May 10th 2008 we started a documentary film about Croatian Radio Club New York. Next year in February 2009 it will be 40 years how Croatian Radio Club started its broadcast. One of the founders is a legendary engineer Vinko Kužina. On Saturday May 1oth we filmed an interview with him at his home in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Cinematography was done by Zvonko Vidušin. I am acting as a director-producer till we find someone who can handle it and Vedran Nazor is an executive producer for Radio Club. We filmed for two days. On Sunday May 11th we filmed at the Croatian Church in Manhattan and Radio Club in Astoria, Queens.

Here are few frames.

Enjoy, Nenad

Today Nenad recorded piano with John Holbrook

Nenad Bach and John Holbrook

Today, May 8th 2008 we recorded piano for six new tracks. Songs: "Everything Is Forever", Heaven and Hell", "Love is on", "Daughter's Eyes", "Aurora" and "Vukovar". My old time friend and 5 time Grammy Award winner sound engineer John Holbrook, as usual did a great job finding sound in my living room on a fairly good baby grand Petrof piano. For the first time we worked with Mislav Jukić, as an assistant engineer. He will do some sessions as an engineer soon. We drank Jana water as John and I are both in love with Jana, from the recording trips to Croatia when we recorded seven Klapa albums and drank 100 bottles of Jana and Jamnica.

First song that we did was "Love is On". Recorded with Grace preamp, two Schoeps MK 21 microphones (capturing up to 40 kHz) and one Audio Technica 4050 for ambient sound. All other songs we recorded with Manley preamp and the same microphones.

Maja Bach, our beloved German Shepherd dog had a solo on Everything Is Forever. Maybe for keeps ...on the film / rock opera / album that will come out of this (Mo' Kool - Everything is Forever).

Exciting day. We started around 10:30 am and finished around 8 pm. Good day of work.

Handball connects people

"Sports is a great catalyst for world peace, because it is transparent as much as it can be, plus people connect through the game regardless where they came from and what they do or make for a living. At the game we are all together on the same spiritual level. It is very close to music"

Meeting legendary Geoff Emerick, The Beatles engineer

Howard Massey, Nenad Bach and Geoff Emerick, New York City April 08

As a member of the NARAS Grammy National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences I was privileged to listen and even communicate with a few questions, with legendary Geoff Emerick. Event happened on April 10th 2008 at 509 West 38th Street (10-11th Avenue) @ Legacy Recording Studio in New York City. The occasion was his new book "Here, There and Everywhere" My life Recording the music of The Beatles by Geoff Emerick and Howard Massey - Foreword by Elvis Costello. That night I met a lot of friends. Among many Greg Calbi, a mastering engineer for my last album "A Thousand Years of Peace", but more impressive is the fact that he mastered John Lennon's albums among many others.
Dear All,

Finally after years of a self-delay I am opening this window of communication. You may call it Blog or Diary or Update. Whatever it is, here we go. I will post few changes that are happening in connection with my music here for you to see it.
